Monsoon Margaritas
Don't forget free Monsoon Margaritas at the Ramada on Saturday, July 21,
at 4:00 pm. Thanks to Ken and Kay Miller and Tom and Melodye Cooke for
sponsoring this fun event.
Movie Night
The movie for Saturday, July 21, is Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore,
which was filmed in Tucson, Amado and Phoenix. Ellen Burstyn won an
Oscar playing Alice Hyatt, a destitute widow who must find the strength
to go on for her young son (Alfred Lutter) in the face of loneliness and
fear, in this classic slice of 1970s cinema from director Martin
Scorsese. When the pair lands in Tucson, Alice takes a job at a diner
and meets a customer (Kris Kristofferson) who helps mend her fractured
heart.
The movie starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Ramada. A donation to the EE Arts
Club of $2.00 is suggested. Please bring your own refreshments.
GVC News
Joe McCalpin, our GVC representative, has provided the following update
on road conditions:
"A rare July meeting of GVC's Traffic and Arroyos
Committee was held to discuss the Street Condition and Evaluation Report
that is to be forwarded to the County at the end of the month. The study
identified the next steps to improve street conditions in Green Valley
after the recent repairs to Abrego. The next steps, funded I think, will
be to extend the Abrego repairs to Continental and to repair the
North/South through streets (read Portillo). The study also looked at
the County owned streets that distribute traffic through the
subdivisions. Called "internal collectors," these streets in EE were
identified as Circulo Napa, Calle Excelso, Camino Holgado and Vereda
Calma. These are first steps in getting the County's attention directed
towards our needs. We will keep up the pressure."
We thank
Joe for his efforts on the Committee.
Storm
Damage
We recently learned that several homes on Regalo behind the Ramada
sustained significant damage during the storm several weeks ago.
Lightning blew a hole in the back wall of one house and some of the
electronic devices in the home were damaged. Fortunately, the residents
were not injured. A similar thing happened on Excelso back in 1989 when
lightning blasted a hole in a common wall.
If your neighbors are away during the monsoons, we encourage you to
check around their houses after storms and report any damage.
Protecting Your Home Electronics During Storms
The Ramada Wi-Fi Internet was recently knocked out of service by a
lightning storm which damaged some of the equipment. If you are
interested in protecting your home electronics against damage from
lightning, you may want to consider installing a "surge protected"
outlet strip (as we will be doing at the Ramada!) or a UPS
(uninterruptible power supply) which can keep the connected devices
running even when the lights go out, while also protecting the
equipment.
Remember to Vote
Which is the best photo taken in EE this year? You be the judge. The
deadline for voting for the Periodico's Photo of the Year contest is
September 1. Cast your ballot by emailing Periodico Publisher Denise
Roessle at
droessle@mac.com or by leaving a message at 399-3312. You can view
the photos in the June Periodico, on the EE website (esperanzaestates.net)
or at the Ramada bulletin board. The winning photographer will receive a
gift card.
Do
Tell
Esperanza Estates may not have the 8 million stories claimed by 'The
Naked City', but everyone here has one. Whether it's an interesting
hobby, a fond memory of growing up in small town America, or an exciting
adventure, the Periodico would like to hear about it for a potential
article. If you have a story to share or if you know of another EE
resident who does but is too shy to come forward, please contact the
Periodico at
cjsurprise@verizon.net.
Hiking Trails
Marian Mundale, EE's Hikemaster, has provided some descriptions and
directions for a few hiking trails near Green Valley. You can view this
information on the EE website. Go to esperanzaestates.net and select "hiking
trails" from the menu on the left. Thanks, Marian, for sharing this
material and leading our weekly hiking group.
Be
Alert
Just as you and your dog prefer to be out and about in the cooler
morning and evening hours, so does our local wildlife. Last week, a
resident reported a much too close encounter with a rattlesnake while
walking on the trail near the opening in the wall along Vereda Calma.
She said it was "amazing how quickly a person can move when
appropriately motivated." Later in the week, the same resident also
reported seeing several cows with their calves crossing Esperanza
Boulevard near Holgado in the early morning. The Sheriff's department
responded to her 911 call promptly and herded the cattle back into the
desert.
While driving down Portillo toward Esperanza recently, the Amorosos
spotted an odd looking critter that likely was our peripatetic
jaguarundi.
Rain
Looks like we are getting some much needed rain in Green Valley with at
least 1/2 inch on Thursday reported by one EE resident. If anyone gets
any good monsoon pictures, please send them to our webmaster at
ee-webmaster@msn.com so he can share them with residents who are
away. (All pictures submitted will also be entered in the
Periodico 'picture-of-the-month' contest for September.)
