Esperanza Estates

Green Valley, AZ

August 8

Good Morning:

Many thanks to Carol Ballard, who has graciously donated a barbecue grille to the HOA, which we will use at the Ramada as a backup unit. Carol's generosity is much appreciated.

Effective January 1 of 2012, incandescent light bulbs as we have traditionally known them will begin to be phased out as a result of a federal law (the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007) mandating the use of energy-efficient bulbs. The following article which appeared in the Boston Globe tells of many people's reaction to this--the hoarding of bulbs, and some of the reasons you might want to join this group. <Click here to read Boston Globe article.

If you are interested in trying something new, you might consider sampling some fruit from the prickly pear cactus, now in abundance around EE. The fruit, called a "tuna", is red in appearance and grows out from the ends of the prickly pear pads. It is sort of the shape of an elongated apple, or an egg. Be careful when you pick them off the plant, as some have very small, hair-like spines, but these are easy to avoid if you use care, and they wash off. Wash the fruit, cut it in half, and scoop out the insides, which have a delightful, berry-like sweet taste. You can blend the fruit in a food processor and then drain the juice, which is a gossamer magenta color, and the taste--deep and mysterious. The nectar can be used for any number of things, including being the main ingredient in a prickly pear margarita.   The most common variety found in EE is the wild Engelmann prickly pear. Prickly pear has been eaten in the Americas as far back as 65 B.C., and possibly earlier. Maybe it is time for you to give it a try.

An interesting story appeared in the Sunday, August 7 edition of the Green Valley News and Sun, describing a motorcycle trip to Alaska taken by EE Board member Sam Barnard, and a couple of friends. <Click here to read the article.>

Long-time EE resident Richard "Dick" Davis passed away June 16. His funeral was in Vermont, on July 10. There will be a memorial service for Dick on August 20, from 2:30 until 3:30 at the Madera Room at La Vista, at La Posada. Anyone who knew Dick is encouraged to attend and share in the celebration of his life.

Many thanks to resident Jim Kitchak, who has volunteered to spray weeds in a common area near his home. Common area weeds are a huge problem for the HOA; we can afford to spray only once and try to wait as late in the monsoon as possible in order to get as many of the weeds as we can. In the interim, volunteers spray the most visible common areas to rid them of weeds. Help by our residents in common areas near them is much appreciated, and helps us keep EE looking good during "weed time".  If you can help us out in this regard, please do so. Your efforts will help us greatly.

The 2011 EE Phone & Street Directory is still available. Call 399-0299 or email merrymary7@q.com if you want to purchase one or more.   $3.00 each, or 2 for $5.00.

CareMore at 191 W Esperanza Blvd is having another Shred It! Day on August 25 from 1-3:00 p.m. in their parking lot.  No charge but if anyone would like to bring food for the Green Valley Community Food Bank they will accept it.

Have a good week.
