Monsoon So Far
The 2013 monsoon season is about half over, and here's how it
compares to last year. The total reported precipitation from
June 15 to July 31 was 4.04 inches in 2012 and 3.08 inches in
2013. The average rainfall in July is 3.38 inches, and we had
3.2 in 2012 compared to 3.08 this year.
Pickleball Pick-Up Games
Court Master Kevin tells us that EE Pickleball is back on track
again. A few persistent participants are meeting at 7:30 am
on Saturday mornings--weather permitting. If you've never
played before, this is a great time to learn Americas's fastest
growing senior sport. Extra paddles and balls are available for
novices, and neighbors are happy to welcome new partners
New Keys Available for Courtside Restrooms
Recurring difficulties with multi-generational keys for the
courtside restrooms have necessitated new locks on the doors at
the Pickleball/Tennis Courts. If you'd like a key, you can pick
one up from Kevin Welsh at 1106 Del Sur. Your pool key
will remain the same. The new key will be for the western
restrooms only.
Calling All Writers
Reminder from Sandy Reed that there's still time to
submit a story:
"Are you a short story writer who wants to get published?
Here's a sure chance. We propose to publish a collection of
short stories, written by EE residents, on any subject. We have
a wealth of interesting experiences, careers, and ideas in
Esperanza. Let's get them in book form that others can enjoy."
Sandy has offered to be the Editor and assist with the
writing. If you are reluctant to write up your ideas,
Sandy will be happy to talk to you and then create a factual or
fictional story based on the conversation. If you are
interested in being part of this project, contact Sandy at
areed56@cox.net or 520-393-1427 or 520-648-0334.
Gleaming Tiles
In case you haven't noticed, the tiles in our EE pool have been
cleaned and polished. Kevin Welsh used a pumice stone and
a lot of elbow grease to remove the accumulation of hard water
stains on the top row of tiles. Now he's tackling the spa tub.
Gives the pool that brand new look. Many thanks Kevin. It's
quite an improvement.
Recreation Director Returns
Tom Cooke has returned from his travels and continues his
fine job of overseeing the Ramada, pool and courts. Thanks to
Bruce Liljegren and Del Bean for keeping the pool in
tip-top shape while Tom was away.
Weeds Are Busting Out All Over
Monsoon rains have given everything growing in EE a boost.
Thanks to the early and often pre-emergent spraying by Tom
Cook and Boyd Morse, the common areas have remained
relatively weed free, but a few residences are sporting a newly
emerging crop. Grazing livestock on your EE property is a no-no.
So if everything's coming up weeds in your yard, it's time to
pull, whack or spray. Good time for absent owners to ask
neighbors and caretakers to make a quick check of your EE
property. If the HOA finds it necessary to do the weed
control for the homeowner, a hefty surcharge is added.
Arizona Poppies Pop Up Under Poolside Palm
Perhaps you've spied them in your yard, beside a walkway or in
the desert. This year they've taken up residence poolside at EE.
Kallstroemia grandiflora, also known as the Arizona Poppy
or Orange Caltrop, has appeared under a palm in the pool
enclosure. Bright yellow petals with an orange/red center have
added a stunning touch of native color to the area. (Might
Jane Ellingson have planted these before she headed for New
Hampshire?)
Request for Cards
A former resident, Joanne McGill, is on hospice care
suffering from a rare form of breast cancer. Her husband,
Wally, was president of our HOA in the late 1990s. She has
been living close to her daughter for the past 8 years, after a
severe stroke. She would appreciate receiving cards from
her EE friends.
Joanne's address is: Joanne McGill, c/o Crestview Nursing & Rehab
Center, 451 W. Orange Street, West Branch, IA 52358.
You Know It's Summer in Green Valley When...
a drove of jackrabbits munches happily on the grass in the
meadow lining both sides of the path from the Tennis/Pickleball
Courts.
