Median Green Project
From Barb McCalpin: "Plans for the MedianGreen project on
Esperanza Blvd. are posted at the ramada (by the kitchen). If you have
questions, you can get answers at Coffee & Donuts on Wednesday, April
16. You can also volunteer or make a donation at that time. Donations
are tax deductible. Checks should be made out to MedianGreen, with
"NW47" (our project number) written on the memo line of your check.
You'll get a receipt in the mail. Donations of any size are welcome and
will help us reach our goal. We're about half way there."
Household Hazardous Waste Event
Keep your house, garage, and our planet safe by disposing of your
hazardous waste at the GVC HHW Event; it will be happening on
Saturday, April 19th at Valley Presbyterian Church parking lot from
8:00 am until noon.
Click here to see a list of the permitted & prohibited items.
(NOTE: many of the household items listed in the 'recycling' category
are accepted, if working, by the EE Enhancement Team for their Patio
Sale; contact Barb McCalpin if you have any items to give as an early
contribution to the sale.)
(By offering to collect items from your neighbors, you can help to
reduce traffic congestion at the event.)
Craig Surprise (617-599-2204) has offered to collect items on
Friday--if you or your neighbors are unable to take items to the event.
Please thank the many volunteers (many of them from EE) for
helping with this worthwhile community service.
Movie Night
Warm evening temperatures are bringing out the movie goers. Join them
this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Ramada to watch Last Vegas.
Three sixty-something friends take a break from their day-to-day lives
to throw a bachelor party in Las Vegas for their last remaining single
pal. Robert DeNiro, Michael Douglas and Morgan Freeman star in this 2013
film. $2.00 donation to the Arts Club. Free popcorn.
Board Meeting Next Week
The April board meeting will be held next Monday, April 21, at 1:00
p.m. at the Ramada. Draft minutes of the March meeting are
posted on the website at esperanzaestates.net.
Sob, Sob, Slurp, Slurp
April is always a somewhat sad month in EE as many of our seasonal
residents start heading back to their other homes and EE events begin to
wind down for the season. Join your friends and neighbors this
Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. for free Coffee & Donuts to say
good-bye or celebrate filing your tax return.
Thanks to the Cookes
and Millers for sponsoring this event.
Readers Seeking Readers
The EE Book Club will meet at the Ramada this Tuesday, April 15, at
2:00 p.m. to discuss Richard Shelton's book Going Back to Bisbee.
Anyone who has read this book is welcome to the meeting. Starting next
November, the Book Club will meet on the second Thursday of each month
(third Thursday in January) at 2:00 p.m. at the Ramada. New members are
welcome even if you can only make one or two meetings.
If you need ideas for your summer reading, the Book Club has picked its
selections for discussion next year. November, The Rosie Project: A
Novel by Graeme Simsion; December, Mr. Owita's Guide to
Gardening: How I Learned the Unexpected Joy of a Green Thumb and an Open
Heart by Carol Wall; January, A Garden of Aloes by G. Davies
Jandrey; February, Last Letters from Attu: The True Story of Etta
Jones, Alaska Pioneer and Japanese POW by Mary Breu; March, The
Art of Hearing Heartbeats by Jan-Philipp Sendker; April, A
Beautiful, Cruel Country by Eva Antonia Wilder-Cruce.
Banner Year for Bees
As we've been reading on EE Nextdoor, bees have been stopping by our
neighborhood on their search for a new home. In some cases they move on
within a day or two, in other cases they find cracks or gaps and take up
residence in our walls or homes. If you want to remove bees on your
property, you can call Bee Bustin at 665-2337.
If it's a scorpion or rattlesnake presenting an immediate threat, the
Green Valley Fire Department designated number for Desert Pest Removal
is 629-9200. They will also deal with the dreaded Chirping Smoke Alarm
should you need assistance with that pest.
Leave the Light On
If you are leaving for the season, please remember not to disconnect the
power to your lamp post. Not only is it required by the CC&Rs, but your
neighbors who enjoy walking in the cool of the early morning and evening
will appreciate it.
Trash Talk
What do trash collection service vendors say when you ask: "How's
business?" (See answer below.) The Green Valley Council is sponsoring a
Trash Collectors Open House on Wednesday, April 23, between 9:30 and
11:00 a.m. at the GVC offices, 55 N. La Canada. Trash collection
service vendors including Titan, Saguaro, Waste Management and Arizona
Sanitation will provide information on their company's services and
policies. Each company will have display tables set up and will have
trucks (hopefully empty and clean) on view in the parking lot. Stop by
any time to chat with the vendors and do comparison shopping.
(Answer: "It's picking up."
