Esperanza Estates

Green Valley, AZ

March 8

Good Morning:

This past Saturday was the day of the big patio and bake sale, sponsored by our Enhancement Team. A jewelry sale also took place as a part of the overall activity. The crowds were huge --the largest turnout ever--when the sale opened, promptly at 7 a.m. and continued steadily nearly all morning. All three sales were a big success. A record of more than $3000 was raised by the Team--all of which will be used by it to fund further enhancements within EE that will benefit all of our residents. This would not have been possible without all of our people who generously donated articles and baked goods for the sale, helped in other ways, and the very hardworking Enhancement Team that organized and put it all together. Everyone involved needs to give themselves a well earned pat on the back for this resounding success. It clearly shows what our Team can do when it has the support of our community. And we will all benefit from what the Team decides to do with these hard-earned funds--every dime of which will come right back to us.

Remember Hamburger Nite tomorrow night at Sunset Ramada, beginning at 4:30. Excellent hamburgers, cheeseburgers, or veggi-burgers and a drink and chips for only $5.00. Table service is included. Come on down and see why these events are so popular. Please bring a can or non-perishable food item to the function for the local Food Bank.

Remember as well Free Coffee and Donuts at the Ramada, Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. This popular event takes place the second Wednesday of each month, so come on down and enjoy coffee and a donut (or two) and socialize with your friends and neighbors--who will also be there. Hope to see you!

The Home Tour was a complete sell-out when tickets went on sale at the patio sale Saturday morning. It will take place on Sunday, March 21. Thanks to all the hard work and organizing that went into this event, the proceeds of which will go to the Enhancement Team for its EE betterment program.

You can also buy a ticket to the Hospitality Committee’s Spaghetti Nite function on March 27 at Hamburger Nite. Tickets for that event are $10, for which a complete Italian-style feast will be provided.

Many thanks to both Greg Gramstad and Barb Cottrell, who always post the Monday Morning Memo on the bulletin board at Sunset Ramada for the benefit of those who don’t have a computer.

A while back a Rosemary bush at the pool had to be removed due to disease. The space it occupied has been filled with three Yucca Gloriosa plants (common name-Spanish Dagger), and looks great. The weeds inside the pool enclosure, which were becoming an issue due to the recent rains, have been sprayed.

We have learned of the death on March 2 of long time EE resident Harvey Young. Harvey had been a resident of Esperanza Estates since 1978, less than a year after the subdivision was founded. He was one of the pioneers here, and condolences are extended to his loved ones.

The book “Love Stories of Esperanza Estates” has been published in a paperback format, 214 pages in length. It contains 23 interesting love stories of people in Esperanza Estates, with a cover photo of our Esperanza Blvd. entrance sign, faced by two lovers. It should be available for sale within the next 30 days, so watch for an announcement. Many thanks to Ed Lord, who has done a lot of work in helping to have the book published.

Congratulations go out to Ralph Simpson, an EE resident who has competed in every GV Senior Games competition since it began, back in 1985. Ralph will be competing this year as well.

On March 13, from 8 a.m. until noon, there will be a hazardous waste collection at the Valley Presbyterian Church, 2800 S Camino del Sol. Most household waste is accepted, but no business waste, explosives, ammunition, radioactive, or controlled substances are permitted. Old medications are OK. There is a $10 fee for an old TV, but all other electronic items are free of charge. This collection had been canceled by Pima County, but thanks to the intervention of the GVCCC, it was reinstated.

On March 10, from 8 a.m. until noon, the annual health fair will be held at the West Social Center, 1070 S. Calle de Las Casitas. This offers an opportunity to speak with about 40 community health care representatives and to take advantage of some free and low cost screenings that will be offered. Our own Arleen Boyuls (who is our Periodico editor) is chair of the Green Valley Health Fair Task Force, organizers of the event.

Our webmaster, Craig Surprise, has added a couple of items of interest to the website at www.esperanzaestates.net.  The first of these is found on the heading Links to Other Sites, and is entitled 'Gas Buddy for Tucson'. This site reports the lowest Tucson gas prices for the previous 24 hour period, so if going to Tucson, you can plan where to fill up for the least cost per gallon. As the prices from Green Valley are always higher, and sometimes as much as 30 cents higher per gallon, this site can provide some useful information.

The next new item is a set of photos that might be of interest, showing the construction of a house next to the Ramada (759 Ensalmo) when it is still raw and unpainted. The surrounding area at that time is much different than at present, and shows the many changes that have taken place in the intervening 30 years. This will be found in the Gallery of Photos page on the site.

Problems in both the men’s and women’s showers at the pool had to be addressed this past week, resulting in no hot water in either for about 3 days. It has been repaired, however, and both are functioning. The shower handles have been changed to a type which exerts less leverage on the fiber washers which cause the water to shut off.

Plans for the annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner (set for April 9) are moving along and have pretty well been finalized. Invitations are being delivered. If you are a volunteer in EE in any capacity and don’t receive an invitation, please call 399-0455. The invitations indicate it is a BYOB affair--however, this is not correct and the Hospitality Committee will provide drinks suitable to most tastes. The Committee will also provide a dessert and coffee following the dinner. This will be a very nice affair, to thank all of our EE volunteers who help keep our subdivision maintained and going strong. The Volunteer of the Year award will be presented.

Our new committee, Bienvenidos a Esperanza will be holding its newcomers brunch on March 14 to introduce and orient EE newcomers {i.e. those who have bought their homes since January 2009} to how our subdivision operates and all it offers. If you are newcomers to EE and have not RSVP'd to your invitation, please do so immediately.

Have a good week.
