Monday Morning Memo----------------February 9th

Good Morning:

The 9th annual Lunar Party was “weathered out” this year from the use of its usual venue, EE Park, and was moved to Sunset Ramada after the weather report showed a 90% chance of rain. This prediction turned out to be 100% correct. However, about 80 people braved the elements and joined the party, and reported a good time. The Usual Suspects were glad the festivities turned out well, and thank all for coming. Once again our Ramada saved the day.

Our pool and spa will be closed all this week due to the need to do work on the drainage systems to bring them into compliance with a new federal law. So please don’t plan on any swimming until February 15. If we are able to open them earlier, they will be posted.

The Bunco game has been cancelled for today, and has been rescheduled for February 16th at the home of Melodye Cooke, 840 Circulo Napa, usual time. Please call with any questions (399-0455) or email to melodye1@cox.net or jbryant148@q.com

Our Enhancement Team has determined that Sunset Ramada needs a first rate sound system--as all who have attended a sizable gather there know. Studying the various options has strongly suggested that a fixed, permanent installation would be far superior to trying to make do with a portable one. The speakers could be permanently mounted near the ceiling, and aimed to distribute the sound in the best possible way for attendees, and at the same time minimize the sound outside the Ramada area to keep it from bothering neighbors. A cordless mike could then be used, through an amplifier, which would give us the maximum flexibility for such a system. Electronics wizard Eric Ellingson has been studying the best possible approach, with help and advice from another such wizard, our webmaster, Craig Surprise.

The cost of this type of system could run in excess of $1000. To raise the funds necessary, the Team is pledging the proceeds of the annual March Patio Sale to this purpose. Thus we need to have a successful sale to enable this purchase to be made. Think for a minute how enjoyable it would be to be able to hear every word at a meeting, or every musical note at a party, that would be possible with a good sound system! Then translate this thought into action by helping with your donations to the patio sale. Go through your house, garage, and patio, and anything that you no longer have a use for (except clothing and electronic items) --donate for the sale. The Team has the capacity to store furniture and practically anything else, and pick up of your items can be arranged. Just call Sandi Oster (625-0039), Barb McCalpin (867-8067), Barb Cottrell (648-3149), or Bev Brow (625-7741). Your help is much appreciated, and as with everything the Team does, will help all of us to better enjoy Esperanza Estates.

Remember free Coffee and Donuts at the Ramada Wednesday morning, February 11, beginning at 10:00 am. No meeting, no agenda, no axe to grind--just a social time with friends and neighbors. It is a freebee, so you can’t miss! We hope to see you there. Come on down and have a cup and a donut, or two.

The regular February Board meeting will take place next Monday, February 16, at 1:00 pm at Sunset Ramada. Speaking will be Judi Smith of the GV Fire Corps, about the lock box program. Please attend. A meeting agenda will accompany the next week’s Memo.

We just learned of the death of Dr. Harry Weitz, long time EE snowbird. He would have been 100 years old soon. In the early days of the subdivision, an annual picnic was held at Madera Canyon and Dr. Weitz always supplied a keg of beer. He will be fondly remembered by many of our “old timers”. Our condolences to his family. He is survived by his wife, Arlene, and sons.

Long Realty is sponsoring an interesting idea--a public book exchange. This will be held on February 27th from 10 am to 3 pm at the Long office at 275 W. Continental Road (between Walgreens and Chase Bank). The idea is to bring a book--take a book. It is free. There is no limit to the number of books you can bring to exchange, but they ask no magazines please.

A memorial bench has been placed within the pool enclosure in memory of Clay Crawford, who recently passed away. The bench was given by Marge, Clay’s widow, and Duke, his faithful dog.

Sunday’s edition of the Green Valley News carried a story about 2 GV residents who won the first gold medal playing pickleball in the Senior Olympics. The story contained the following excerpt:

The previous best came from the GVR group’s official ambassador for the game, Gary Beatty, who coached [the 2 gold medal winners] and many others here, and won a silver medal last year at Voyager, finishing runner-up in the open division to Pat Kane, ranked number 1 in the country in his age group. “John and I [the gold medal winners] are both fortunate to have been taught to play pickleball under Gary Beatty”, said one of the medal winners.

Gary Beatty is our EE pickleball instructor and coach, and gives lessons and a clinic twice weekly at the Esperanza Estates tennis and pickleball court, currently held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, from 10 am to noon. There is no charge for the lessons. Thus this is a great opportunity to learn pickleball from one of the game’s best players. Come out and join us.

Ken Miller wishes to thank everyone who attended his farewell party following his retirement from the Board, and who send cards and called to thank him for his service.

Have a good week.
