Monday Morning Memo----------------February 2nd

Good Morning:

Remember the annual Lunar Party this coming Sunday, at EE (Flag) Park on Holgado. The festivities will begin at 5:00, and the entire subdivision is invited. There is no charge. We will have a bonfire, hot dogs, chili, drinks -- both alcoholic and not -- smoors, and other goodies as well. This will be the 9th such party, and it is always a good time. Dress warmly, bring a chair, and help howl in the new moon. This is not a function of our Hospitality Committee, but is sponsored by “the usual suspects”, a group of our residents who enjoy putting on this annual festivity. In the unlikely event of rain, the event will move to Sunset Ramada.

Kudos to Eric Ellingson and Lance Ewing, who have repaired our Sunset Park fountain. It has had an electrical problem for the past year or so, but is now working well. Many thanks, Eric and Lance!

We have had a report of a cat who is decimating the quail population in the 600 block of Placita Nueva. The animal appears to be domesticated. If you have such an animal and live in this vicinity, it is requested it not be permitted to wander the area uncontrolled.

Work on the lamp post committee will begin its work this month. A meeting will be scheduled to start the process of arriving at a solution. Watch the Memo for time and place. We can still use volunteers, so if interested, please call 399-0455. This is a problem we cant kick down the road any longer.

The pickleball clinic will move from Tuesday and Thursday, to Tuesday (10 to noon) and Wednesday (10:30 to 12:30), beginning February 10th and 11th. Thursday play has presented problems to some players and we will see if Wednesday might work out better as a second day. If there is a second day that might work better, please call 399-0455. Our instructor and coach, Gary Beatty, is continuing to work with players and students each week, and in addition is also working on our court with further improvements to the court surface. Player Greg Gramstad has also donated considerable work to this effort. If interested in learning and playing pickleball, please join us at the clinics. It is fun and good exercise, and Gary is a great and fun teacher.

The new salt-water pool conversion equipment has been installed, and will be operational soon. Pool users should begin to note the difference within a few days of the start-up. We are also planning for some needed repair work on the cool decking around the pool, which has begun to deteriorate somewhat. Bids are being received and evaluated for this task.

The Board has been examining bids to bring our pool and spa into compliance with a new federal law, requiring a special anti-vortex device on the drains. It is a federal “mandate” that we comply, so there is no choice in the matter. There is a risk of a substantial fine for non-compliance. After looking at the bids, the Board has selected a contractor and will be awarding the work to a company called E-Konomy Pool Service and Supplies. The cost will be approximately $1250 to modify the drains on both the pool and the spa. This was substantially less than the other bids received, and this company comes well recommended. This work will necessitate closing the pool and spa for about 3-4 days. As soon as we have the dates, the pool will posted. Approval for the work was made by the Board at a special meeting held February 1.

We have had a couple of additional volunteers for adding homes to the Home Tour, but unfortunately there is insufficient time to put the tour together this year. Accordingly, it will be moved to next year. We are still needing a chairperson for this event. Primarily this person will only need to act as a coordinator, as we have a number of volunteers who have worked on the event in the past to help, and are familiar with how the Tour operates. If you want to help our community and have a bit of time, this is a great way to volunteer to do it. The time demands are moderate. Call 399-0455 for further details. We really don’t want to see this activity die, as it has always been so enjoyed and such a success in the part.

At the February meeting of the Board of Directors of Esperanza Estates, Judi Smith of the Green Valley Fire Corps will give a presentation about the Corps Lock Box Program. The Fire Corps is a volunteer adjunct of the Fire Department, and has a relationship similar to the one between SAV and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

A Lock Box is a device which is mounted securely near your front door and contains a key which permits the Fire Department, Ambulance, or other emergency responder to enter your home without the necessity to break down your door if you are inside and incapacitated as a result of a sudden medical emergency.

If this sounds like a program that might be of interest to you, or if you simply have questions about it, please plan on attending this meeting. The Board meets at 1:00 p.m. on February 16th, at Sunset Ramada.

Kudos to our Periodico editor, Arleen Boyuls, for an excellent January issue. The same to Char Petry and to all of her deliverers.

The EE Enhancement Team is continuing to actively seek items for the Annual Patio Sale, which will be held on Sat., March 7th at the Sunset Ramada. Proceeds from the sale fund improvements to our Ramada and common areas. Household items in good condition, including furniture, appliances, house wares, dishes, glassware, linens, decor, toys, books, CDs, etc. are welcome and pick up is available. Please NO clothing or electronics (computer equipment, phones, etc.).

To donate items, please contact: Sandi Oster (625-0039), Barb McCalpin (867-8067), Barb Cottrell (648-3149), or Bev Brow (625-7741).

On February 28th there will be a collection site for hazardous waste at the Valley Presbyterian Church, 2800 S. Camino del Sol. Call 399-0455 for details on acceptable waste.

Have a good week. Hope your team won the Super Bowl. See you at the Lunar Party.
