Monday Morning Memo

December 2, 2013        Esperanza Estates        Green Valley, AZ

Afternoon Aqua Exercise Begins
Looking for an exercise routine that relieves joint pain, improves muscle strength and boosts your heart and lungs? Look no further than the EE pool. Afternoon aqua exercise is scheduled for 3-4 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You don't need to be a swimmer to benefit from this workout; each participant adapts this workout to her/his needs and limitations.

Morning Water Aerobics Awaits Spring
Because of cool mornings, the Water Aerobics Group will be on hiatus until next year when the mornings warm up again. Watch the Memo for start-up date.

EE Social Committee Forming
Interested in continuing the EE tradition of great get-togethers? Join this newly forming group at the Ramada at 10 AM on Tuesday. Can't make this meeting, but willing to pitch in? Call Marla Reis at 360-708-0855.

New Date for December Gardeners Meeting
This month, the EE Gardeners will meet on Wednesday, December 4 at 1:00 p.m. at the Ramada. New members are welcome.

Home Decor Group
Donna Shay is starting up a new discussion group in EE this week. It's called Home Decor, and the first gathering will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 5th in the Ramada. Our first topic of discussion will be on entertaining. What a perfect topic for December. Come join the fun!

Second Annual EE Christmas Carols Event
Rejoice! Having learned a few things from last year's caroling experience, EE carolers have another event planned for Saturday, December 21 (tentative date). We will ride in golf carts to various locations in EE where we will stop and sing several carols. This way we should be able to get to more areas in a more organized fashion. If you would like to join in this event, please contact Cynthia Surprise at cjsurprise@verizon.net. Singing ability is not required.

EE Adventure Group
Like exploring areas in Southern Arizona, but find it more fun to go with a group? We are trying to organize an outing for December. EE resident Jolene Hartje is a docent at San Javier Mission and would like to conduct a tour for us. Three possible dates are Saturday, December 14 at 12:30; Friday, December 20 at 10:30; or Thursday, December 26 at 11:00. If you are interested in being part of our group tour, email Cynthia Surprise at cjsurprise@verizon.net by Saturday, December 7, and tell us your preferred date(s). We'll organize car pooling for the most popular date.

Re-Training Fido?
An EE resident noting a distinctive odor to last year's light pole decorations has requested that dog walkers encourage their pets to aim lower--below the festive garland. That sounds like a daunting task. We will share, however, the tip Bill Berdine gave us last year to reduce the number of animals walking through our front yard. Placing a small boulder--gallon jug size--at each corner of your yard will attract 'sniffers' and 'markers' to these locations. Other areas are ignored.

Nippy Nights -- Brrr!
Night time temperatures are forecast to dip to the freezing point this week. Now's the time to make sure you know where your freeze cloths are and to check the insulation around your outdoor water pipes and water softening units.

Elves Ready for Work
There's still time to enlist the aid of the Enhancement Team's Elves to help decorate your lamppost for the holidays. The cost is $10 if you already have the decorations, $15 if you need decorations, and an extra $2 if you need the electrical plug-in. Call Jackie at 269-7864 and she'll get in touch with the Elves. The deadline is December 15.

More Cactus Donations
EE Gardeners are at it again. Digging Team Dick 'El Agave' Carver, Tom 'El Excadavora' Buinicky, Bruce 'El Pickax' Moulton, and Stacie 'Mucha Bonita Mama' Meyer, under the supervision of Gardeners 'El Presidente' Bill Berdine have planted another group of cactus and agave in Mountain View Park. Thanks to them all for their hard work.
Thanks, also, to Vince and Bev Brow for this generous donation of these already desert-adapted plants.

Mountain View Bench Donation
A new bench will soon be installed at Mountain View Park thanks to the generosity of Jim and Joey Sourant. Gardeners are looking for another Santa to donate funds for a second bench. Contact Bill Berdine at 344-7301 or whberdine@roadrunner.com if you'd like to admire the view from a bench you personally donated.

Arts Club Projects
The Arts Club has three new projects on the drawing board to enhance our neighborhood. They plan to tile the niches on the exterior pool wall using a mosaic design, apply a mosaic design to large terracotta pots for the parks, and transform a chiminea into a mosaic quail. We look forward to watching their progress.

Stoic Workers Survive Woes on Stoney's Walkway
A tough band of EE volunteers worked overtime last week to weed, prune and clean along Stoney's Walkway. Sore backs and pricked fingers were their reward for hours of back-breaking work. Many thanks go out to Marian Mundale and her crew of Jim Copeland, Cynthia & Hugh Gates, Mary Hess, Fred Hills, Stacie Meyer, Sandi & Roger Oster, Marla Reis, and Barb Rydall.

Sports Update
The Thursday afternoon ladies pickleball play has been suspended due to lack of attendance.  Greg Gramstad will fill in for Kevin Welsh as Courtmaster while Kevin is in Germany during December.

Parks Decked Out for the Season
EE's parks and Ramada have undergone their holiday makeover, thanks to a few good neighbors. Outdoor decor divas Sandy Oster, Lorna Kitchak and Barb Rydall assisted by Marian Mundale, Mary Beth Wallace, Bev Brow, Jane Ellingson, Ollie and Ron McLaughlin, Bob and Linda Winterland, Cynthia Surprise and Kris Bean decked out Esperanza Park, Flag Park and the Sunset Ramada area. Decorating of Portillo Park will be completed this week under the direction of Barb McCalpin and Geri Lindberg. Thanks to these good neighbors for brightening up our neighborhood.

Hikers on Hiatus til after Holidays
Fearless Leader Marian Mundale has sensibly returned from the northland and is polishing her hiking boots and sharpening her hiking sticks, ever ready to lead the EE Hikers forward into the wilderness. Leading them out may be another matter. Interested in a relaxed hike with friends? Stay tuned. Rumor has it there'll be a trek January 6, 2014. We'll keep you posted.

VIN Etching
The Sheriff's Auxiliary Volunteers will provide their free vehicle identification number etching service on Saturday, December 7 from noon to 4:00 p.m. in the parking lot near their offices next to the Joyner Library.  Having the VIN etched on a car window is considered a deterrent to car theft.
