November 1

Good Morning:

If all goes according to plan, you will receive this and future issues of the Monday Morning Memo through a commercial emailing service, as noted at the bottom of the memo.  (The modest first year's cost of the service has been donated by two EE homeowners who requested anonymity.)

Why change now?  About 3 weeks ago we began to have trouble with the Cox email account that has been used for the past 5 years with no problems.  For an unknown reason, the MMM started to be marked as 'spam' even before it was sent, and Cox just refused to send it.  When we switched to our 'backup' email service, an unusually large number of the copies didn't get to the intended recipients.

We determined that the best way out of this dilemma was to begin using a commercial emailing firm, one recommended by a number of EE residents.  Going forward, we will be able to send out the MMM each week -- without dealing with Cox or other email providers and their constantly changing requirements -- and at the same time have a system that will let stand-in editors create the memo in my absence.

Thanks for bearing with us through the problems of the past few weeks. Particular thanks are due our Webmaster, Craig Surprise, for his efforts in helping to resolve this issue.

November 1 marks the start of winter hours for the pool and spa: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Please plan your use of these facilities accordingly, as these hours are enforced. When the weather has changed to the point that it is becoming even cooler in the evenings, the pool and spa will be covered at 7 p.m. No one is allowed in the pool enclosure during closed hours without Board permission.

Because of the change to winter pool hours, the Water Aerobics Group will now meet from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays until further notice. Come join us. We have a lot of fun!!!

The Budget Committee of the HOA Board met on Tuesday, October 26, to rough out a preliminary operating budget for the coming year. More work is needed, but when finalized, the budget will be published in the Periodico.  The current financial condition of our HOA is sound, due to realistic but careful budgeting, and an enormous amount of effort by our Treasurer, Joan Moreaux.

We have just observed that access to the West Desert Preserve at the west end of Excelso is now provided by a 'pedestrian-friendly' steel gate, replacing the barbed-wire movable fence which had been wired shut some months ago.  This should allow desert walkers who have enjoyed this area for years to use it once again.

Board member Joe McCalpin, our representative to the GVCCC, is a strong believer in the 'squeaky wheel' theory for getting things done.  Recent repairs by Pima County crews no doubt would not have been completed without his 'squeaking'.  Included were some sidewalk repairs, pot-hole filling, a visit from the county flood control department, and installation of a traffic control sign. Good job, Joe!  (Joe's reports on GVCCC activities appear in each Periodico and warrant a read.)

Have a good week.
