Monday Morning Memo---------October 27th

Good Morning:

Security Alert

We have received nine notifications of burglaries and attempted burglaries in EE within the past short while. Recent newspaper accounts suggest there are more than this that have occurred within Esperanza Estates. In nearly all the cases, the crimes were committed and attempted on homes that were vacant for the summer months. In six of the reported cases, there was no evidence of a forced entry, suggesting entry was gained by someone who had a key to the residence. The principal items being stolen are flat screen TV sets.

Thus, common sense suggests that we should all carefully review who might have keyed access to our homes.

It is also strongly suggested that persons who are away from EE for long periods retain someone to keep their yards weed-free, and not to allow flyers, phone books, etc. to accumulate. It is very easy to spot a home that is unoccupied when the yard and patio are full of weeds, dead leaves and blown-in debris, and other evidence of non-occupancy. These are the types the thieves are looking for.

It is also a good time to review all of your securities measures. Make sure your door locks work, and your security lights are operating. Keep an eye out for suspicious activity in your neighborhood and know your Neighborhood Watch Block Captain and Assistant. Report anything you see that looks amiss to the authorities. Write down suspicious license numbers of vehicles that don’t appear to be from our neighborhood, or seem to be lingering in the area.

There will be an election for Board directors in January at the annual meeting, and candidates are being solicited. Board members serve for three year terms. The position is interesting and rewarding, and if you would be interested, or would just like more information, please contact Board Secretary Joe McCalpin at 867-8067, or any member of his committee. Serving with Joe on the nominating committee are Mary Beth Wallace (399-0299) and Jim Lindberg (777-4972). Our Board has the important duties of administering our annual budget and generally taking care of all aspects Esperanza Estates. If you have ideas about how things should be done in our subdivision, the Board is the place for you. Please consider serving.

A meeting of the budget committee will be held at Sunset Ramada tomorrow (October 28th) at 1:00 to review and plan for the 2009 HOA budget. Any interested resident is invited to attend.

Craig Surprise, our webmaster par excellent, has asked that if anyone has had difficulty viewing the latest copy of the Periodico on the EE website, that they send him an email at his address shown on the site so advising. He has a solution involving use of a special program to view it, which will take care of the difficulties.

Our Hospitality Committee has the next Hamburger Nite scheduled for October 29th, this coming Wednesday, at 4:30, at Sunset Ramada. The usual goodies will be available, hamburgers, cheeseburgers and veggie burgers, along with a selection of drinks. Bring your own alcohol. The last Hamburger Nite drew about 100 people, and was greatly enjoyed--as they all are. Please come down to the event and spend some social time and see your friends--and enjoy our Ramada. The weather is perfect for this type of event.

The Men’s Auxiliary of the Esperanza Enhancement Team is in need of some Travertine and Norfolk Brown paint, for a project to benefit the HOA. If you have a can, or a part of a can from another job left over, and would be willing to donate the same, please call Lance at 625-7353.

A meeting of the Neighborhood Watch Block Captains and Assistants will be held at Sunset Ramada on December 6th, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Please put this on your calendar.

A Versacourt surface has been placed on the old tennis court surface, and looks very nice. The new surface covers the cracking that has occurred on the old surface, and will eliminate that as a problem. This is one of the newest technologies for tennis courts, and has a long service life. The Board was able to make an exceptional buy on this surface, which was moved here from another court near Phoenix. Reportedly it is a much more comfortable surface to play on due to a shock-absorbing impact design, to protect knees, ankles and the lower back. Some additional work will be done on finishing touches to the surface, but it is playable currently.

We have a tennis group that meets at the court and plays each Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. They would like any other interested players to join them there.

One of the fastest growing sports in the US is pickleball, a game played on a tennis type court, but with different equipment. It is much easier to play, and reportedly a lot of fun. We may have a volunteer pickleball coach in the near future who has agreed to provide lessons at no charge to our membership. If this program can be put together, there is a possibility that we will be able to get much more use out of our tennis court. Watch for further details.

Another Home Tour will be held next Spring if sufficient homes can be located to include. About eight are needed. This would be the forth time this event has been held in EE. If you would be willing to have your home in the tour, or help out with the event, please call Melodye at 399-0455. This tour is for EE residents only, and not open to the general public. In the past these events have been sell-outs, and very popular. Included is a wine and cheese event at Sunset Ramada afterward. Please consider putting your EE home in the tour. There are no criteria except your pride in the uniqueness of what you have done with your home. Proceeds are used for EE improvements.
