Monday Morning Memo

October 22, 2012        Esperanza Estates        Green Valley, AZ

Start Your Morning with a Splash
Join the Beauties at 8 am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the EE pool for a morning warm up designed to keep you moving comfortably all day. Water temperature is set at 83 degrees--perfect for an active start. Starting November 1 the class will begin at 8:30 am.

What's That Racquet?
With neighbors returning daily, the EE courts will once again resound with the percussive ping of pickle balls. Pick up your paddles and head west to meet the faithful fanatics at 8 am on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Never played pickle ball?? You'll find patient, enthusiastic EE residents happy to get you started.

Name Tag Orders
The next order for name tags will go in on October 24, and the tags will arrive before the Halloween Party. If you wish to buy a tag and have it delivered the same time, please contact Melodye Cooke by no later than the October 23rd, via email (melodye1@cox.net) or 399-0455. In the future, tags will be ordered on a monthly basis. The cost is $6.00 per tag, payable when ordering.

Halloween Potluck on the Horizon
Don a frightful or delightful costume if you're so inclined. Cook up a caldron of delicious potluck fare, and join your friends and neighbors at the Ramada on Wednesday, October 31. The Hospitality Committee will welcome you at 4:30 pm with pop and adult beverages. If we're lucky, our local crooners will keep the karaoke going til dawn.....well, maybe until 9 pm.

Hats Off To EE's HAZMAT Team
From EE's GVC Representative, Joe McCalpin:

"It was Saturday, October 20, 2012; the five Eco-Warriors of Esperanza Estates toiling under the relentless desert sun entered the highly toxic environment of Household Hazardous Waste collection to do their part in improving the ecological condition of our community. The five volunteers were Del Bean, Dean Hess, Joe McCalpin, Craig Surprise and Kevin Welsh. Seriously, the HHW collection effort was a record-setting success with over 850 households bringing toxic materials, unneeded medicines, unneeded electronics and documents for shredding.
Esperanza Estates was well represented. As we were finishing up moving some last bits of cardboard onto the truck, I looked around and noted the last remaining volunteers were all EE residents. Typical.
We need also to applaud the residents of Green Valley who sat in their cars, golf carts, one motor scooter, and a bicycle, waiting, for the most part patiently, to drop off their material."

Your Key to the Throne Room
Your current key to the EE pool should fit the doors on the classy new restrooms at the tennis courts. Due to many generations of keys being cut and used over the years, some homeowners have reported difficulty getting their keys to work in the new locks. Repeated jiggling and use may help. If you've tried all that and still can't get the doors to open, contact Tom Cooke, former president, current recreation director, and all-around wizard. His phone # is 399-0455.

Those #*!^% Potholes
If you've bounced over a memorable pothole that needs fixing in Green Valley, contact Joe McCalpin at 867-8067. He's the EE link to the joint Green Valley Council/ Pima County effort to identify road repair priorities.

Update on Census Survey Incident
In last week's memo, Mary Beth Wallace reported on a suspicious incident with an alleged census taker.  Always conscientious, Mary Beth followed up with SAV and learned that the Census Bureau is doing a special survey in our area.  However the census taker's actions--peeping in the windows and not allowing the resident to read her ID badge--was neither appropriate nor acceptable. Mary Beth recommends that if anyone comes to your home be sure to check their ID and conduct the business at the door without letting the person enter.  Thanks for the update, Mary Beth.

Recycling Your Trash Options
With Talking Trash withdrawing from the Green Valley area, confusion abounds as to the days, costs, and container options available from Saguaro Environmental (520-382-0052) and Titan Waste, Recycle and Trash (520-382-1009).  We will try to resolve the discrepancies and send out a Special Notice on your trash pickup options as early as possible this week.  As with any transaction, we remind residents to write down the time, date, and name of person spoken to, and to repeat, confirm, and note all information given by phone.

Donut Delight
Thirty-seven EE residents attended the first monthly Coffee & Donuts last Wednesday at the Ramada. Neighbors renewed friendships and sipped tea and coffee to start their day. Dean Hess won the door prize -- lunch for four at Domino's Pizza. Thanks to the Millers and the Cookes for their sponsorship of these events.

Board Highlights
More than 30 EEers, including 3 new residents, attended the HOA Board meeting on Monday, October 15th. Regular reports from committee chairs brought attendees up to date on finance, maintenance and improvements. Minutes of the meeting are posted on the EE website here.

"Attention White Elephant Shoppers"
A reminder that the White Elephant will hold its annual Midnight Madness sale, Green Valley Style, on Thursday, October 25.  Don't worry about resting up ahead of time. 'Green Valley Style' means the event takes place from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Featured items will include designer fashions, shoes, purses, fine jewelry, and small patio items.
