Monday Morning Memo

October 21, 2013        Esperanza Estates        Green Valley, AZ

Board Meets Today
The EEHOA Board meets today at 1 pm at the Ramada. All residents are encouraged to attend. If you're new to the area, it's a great way to meet your neighbors and become a part of the community. The usual agenda items are listed at the bottom of this memo.

New Show Time
You've probably noticed that it's getting dark earlier these days. So starting this week, the weekly Wednesday movie at the Ramada will begin at 6:30 p.m. This weeks film is It's Complicated, a comedy staring Meryl Streep, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

Is Your Costume Ready?
The Hospitality Committee will host the annual Halloween Potluck on Thursday, October 31, starting at 4:30 p.m., at the Ramada. Hospitality will provide the beverages, but please bring a dish to share with the other ghosts, goblins and witches. Costumes are encouraged, but not required. Prizes will be awarded.

Gardeners Meeting
The EE Gardeners will meet tomorrow, October 22, at 11:00 a.m. at the Ramada. Upcoming activities will be discussed. New members are welcome. Contact Bill Berdine at 344-7301 for more information.

Tillie the Tug
The Gator now has a companion. Thanks to Bill Berdine, the Gardeners purchased a 2004 Statesman 20 HP lawn tractor for tugging the already purchased water wagon as well as providing a means for light hauling of planting supplies, rock, soil, etc. The Gardeners have great plans for the coming year. Stay tuned.

Dogs Looking for People to Walk
Cobre and Kelly Lear, the canine "children" of Antje Lear, are looking for humans to accompany them on their daily walks. If you are a dog person without a dog of your own, they'd be glad to join you on a neighborhood jaunt. Give their "mom" a call at 303-0144 to find out more about these two.

Ready Your Racquets
Courtmaster Kevin Welsh has announced new pickleball times.
Tuesdays 8:00 a.m. Recreational Play (all skill levels)
Thursdays 8:00 a.m. Recreational Play (all skill levels)
Thursdays 1:00 p.m. Ladies Only (all skill levels)
Saturdays 8:00 a.m. Competitive Play (advanced players)
Sundays 10:00 a.m. Recreational Play (all skill levels)
Courts are open anytime for play Saturdays thru Thursdays. Courts are used for tennis on Friday mornings.

White Elephant Week
Reminder of two upcoming annual events this week. The White Elephant will hold its annual 'Midnight Madness' sale this Thursday, October 24. For you newcomers, it's Green Valley style, meaning it starts at 3:00 p.m. and runs until 6:00 p.m., so you won't need to nap in order to attend. The White Elephant Parade will take place on Saturday, October 26, starting at 10:00 a.m. Remember that parts of La Canada will be closed to traffic during the parade.

Food Bank
The GV Food Bank needs your assistance to purchase turkeys and hams for the holidays. If you would like to help, you can mail your tax-deductible donation to Green Valley-Sahuarita Community Food Bank, 250 E. Continental, Green Valley, AZ 85614. Direct donations of turkeys, hams, holiday foods and baking essentials are also welcome and greatly appreciated.
Please remember that EE maintains a bin at the Ramada for all donations of non-perishable items.

HazMat
GVC's hazardous waste collection day last Saturday was a great success, thanks in no small part to the work of the following EE volunteers: Roberta and Wayne Bower, John Isgrigg, Terry Jackson, Joe McCalpin (chairman), Barb McCalpin, Bruce and Judy Moulton, Pat Sharpe (volunteer recruiter), Lillie Sheehan, Ben Sheffield, Jim Sourant, Cynthia Surprise, Lynn Theder and Kevin Welsh. GVC reports that 741 cars (representing 842 homes) drove through the recycling area, 6,000 pounds of electronics were recycled and 100 pounds of meds were collected. The Food Bank was also pleased with what they collected. Thanks to everyone who made this a successful event.

Survey Results
We recently conducted a survey of 300 EE households regarding installing a loop at the Ramada for people with hearing aids. Of the 125 survey responses received:
30 (24% of the respondents) indicated they have some hearing impairment; 16 (just over 50%) of those who reported they are hearing impaired indicated that they'd be more likely to attend a Ramada function if the loop were installed.

What Price Gas?
If you buy gas at the Safeway location at the corner of La Canada and Duval Mine Road, you'll need to take another look at the pump after selecting your method of payment. If you pay with credit card, ten cents per gallon will be added to the purchase price. Cash and debit card purchases will ring up at posted prices. A common practice in some areas of the country, this is a new wrinkle in Green Valley.

Condolences
Long-time former EE resident Jeanne Barzan recently passed away in California. A very active member of the EEHOA for many years, Jeanne and a few other residents started a group they called N.E.E.T. (Neighborhood Environment Enhancement Team) in 1998 to enhance and make improvements to our subdivision, and worked hard to make it a success. In addition, Jeanne served on the EE Board, and was also the first recipient of the EE Volunteer of the Year award. Our condolences to her family and friends.
