Green Valley, Az.

October 19

Good Morning:

Many thanks to Bruce Liljegren for editing the Memo for the past couple of weeks, and to webmaster Craig Surprise for sending it out. Our webmaster has a copy of the distribution list for the Memo, which is kept at a separate location than the master list, in case of a crash---which unfortunately happens from time to time.

The regular October meeting of the EE Board of Directors will be held today at Sunset Ramada, beginning at 1:00 pm. All residents are invited to attend. A meeting agenda follows this edition of the Memo.

Our Hospitality Committee held their first Hamburger Nite of the fall season this past Tuesday at Sunset Ramada. Two volunteers from our Board gave the Ramada a good scrubbing the morning before the event. About 60 people enjoyed the weather-perfect evening, and the Committee was in its usual excellent form. They have another Hamburger Nite planned for November 10, and are working on the rest of their fall schedule. Watch for it.

Kudos to Mary Beth Wallace for all of her hard work keeping our award winning Neighborhood Watch program up and running smoothly. Local sheriff’s department authorities have described our program in EE as a model, and the best in all of Green Valley. Mary Beth has also recently been leaving suggestions with people moving in and out of EE that if they have surplus household items, that they donate them to our Enhancement Team’s annual yard sale. In addition, Mary Beth is active and helpful in many more volunteer areas which help all of us to enjoy our neighborhood and life in Esperanza Estates. Mary Beth, we’re glad you are here!

Mary Beth also has the following announcement from Neighborhood Watch:

Neighborhood Watch would like a volunteer to join our group as a Block Captain. The area are the homes from 746 to 794 Calle Del Regalo on the north side of the street. The block captain needs to be from that area and can live on either side of the street. Audrey Boffa as been Block Captain of the area for several years. She has moved from EE and we thank her for time she has been a volunteer for our subdivision. Call Mary Beth at 399-0299 or email Mary Beth.

A cocktail party was held Sunday afternoon at Sunset Ramada, hosted by members of the Enhancement Team in honor of Joe and Barb McCalpin, Jim and Geri Lindberg, Bruce Liljegren, and Tom Cooke, who worked this past summer on the concrete floors at the Ramada to refinish the same.

Gary Beatty, our pickle ball instructor and coach, has returned to GV for the winter and will be putting our pickle ball program back together shortly. It will be similar to last years. Watch for details and game scheduling.

The moving sale at 821 Napa, promoted in the Sept. Periodico, listed the date as October 14! This was a typo, and the date has also been changed to Friday Oct. 23rd beginning at 7:30am.

For organizing the sale--pricing, setting up, and manning the sale-- the Enhancement Team will receive a nice commission. Proceeds will be used for additional sun/wind screens on the Ensalmo side of the Sunset Ramada.

Some items that the team has already collected for the annual spring Patio Sale at the Ramada will be included in this moving sale. If you have questions or items that you would like to donate contact Denise 399-3312, Geri 777-4972, or Barb 867-8067. Arrangements can be made for pick-up.

A crew of volunteers (Joe McCalpin, Jim Lindberg, Bruce Liljegren, Tom Cooke and Stan Hackett--a guest of Joe’s) spent Thursday afternoon and part of Friday re-sanding and resealing the Ramada floor. The bricks forming the floor are for the most part set upon a sand base, with additional sand between them for stability purposes. Over time, and following power washing, much of the original sand is lost, which can lead to wobbling and a possible trip hazard. Accordingly the floor was covered with a fine sand, which was then swept into the spaces between the bricks. The floor should be stable now well into the future. A sealer was also applied to the bricks to aid in restoring their original color and protecting them from the elements.

Our webmaster, Craig Surprise, submitted the following useful information:

The link below, to a N.Y. Times article on October being 'Cybersecurity Awareness Month', is worth referring anyone to if they don't already have antivirus software on their PC.  All three free programs mentioned in the article may be downloaded by following the links provided in the article. It's worth noting that the sites repeatedly try to get you to buy an 'upgraded' version rather than simply downloading the free version. However, the free version of AVG Free, as one example, is fully-featured enough to suffice for most users, and far better than having no protection at all!  (Webmaster's note: installing antivirus programs on PC's with limited memory may cause a slow-down in the loading and running of programs; if this happens on your PC, your options are to increase the amount of RAM memory, tolerate the slowdown, or remove the antivirus software and hope for the best.)

A total of $67 was contributed by Melodye and Tom Cooke, and Sheila Bennen, to the fund to add additional sun/wind screens, from the sale of monsoon chances.

Prior to 2001, the area now known as Sunset Park, and currently beautifully landscaped with a fountain and appropriate desert flora, was an ugly slab of concrete that had been lying dormant and unused for about 15 years. A small group of volunteers had determined to rectify the situation and bring this area back into the fold, and beautify it, by first breaking up and disposing of the concrete slab and then landscaping the area. A tape of this effort is now available for anyone interested in seeing how this work was done, courtesy of Bev Brow, whose husband Vince was active in this effort. Other volunteers in the tape are Lance Ewing, Ben and Mona Shefield, Bill Milne (now deceased) and Tom Cooke. Others who aided in the work involved are unfortunately, not shown. The tape is interested in another aspect--our gorgeous Sunset Ramada had not yet been built--it wasn’t constructed until 2006. The improvements to Sunset Park were, however, truly the impetus for the construction of the Ramada, some years later. It became apparent that we, as an association, could do significant things. So we did, and plowed forward with construction of a much needed facility--Sunset Ramada. We need to keep this effort. and this special élan in mind. We can do it if we try.

To view this tape, contact the editor at 399-0455.

Have a good week.
