Good Morning:

The Monday Morning Memo now goes out to 250 addressees, up from 222 a year ago. The first issue was put out June 27, 2005, and went out to about 20 residents. The originator of the Memo was EE vice-president Bruce Liljegren, and its first editor was then-president Max Perry, who got it off to a great start. Now, about 234 editions later, it continues to grow.

To help you to fulfill your New Year's Resolutions, a few of our women residents are forming a Strength Training Class using weights of no more than 5 pounds. We will meet for a short informational meeting at Sunset Ramada on Monday, January 11 at 9:30 a.m. REMEMBER-- "STRONG WOMEN LIVE LONGER" Call Jane at 625-7782 for more info.

About 75 people joined the Enhancement Team for the best First Day Event ever at Sunset Ramada. The day was perfect--sunny and warm, and the food and the company most enjoyable. This event continues to grow in popularity each year, and it has now become an EE tradition. Many thanks to the Team for their attractive decorations and for setting up the Ramada for the event, and thanks to the Grill master, Ed Buchholz, for supervising the grilling of any number of varied cuts of meat and poultry. All did a great job. The Team asked attendees to play a special game involving finding varied objects hidden in a jar of seeds and grains. The game was won by (no surprise) the table led by our webmaster Craig Surprise, who won a bottle of two-buck chuck for the effort. If you forgot the First Day Event, be sure and put it on your calendar now for next year. You won't want to miss it again.

Remember the Hospitality Committee's Hamburger Nite planned for January 12, at Sunset Ramada. The event begins at 4:30 (cocktail sippers--bring your own alcohol) and continues until the last dog is hung. Excellent hamburgers, cheeseburgers and vegi-burgers, drinks, table service, all necessary condiments, and a fun time at a nominal cost. Come on down and see your friends and enjoy the evening.

The sun/wind screen enclosures for the Ramada are now completely installed, with the final three put in on December 31. This enables the Ramada to be nearly entirely closed off from the elements. This was a project of our Enhancement Team, donated to our HOA, and at a cost of about $12,000--the lions share of which was paid by the Team. It joins the many other improvements the Team has made to our Ramada, which altogether would total more than $30,000, not counting the value of their donated labor. What the Team has done for Esperanza Estates over the past 10 years, not only at the Ramada but elsewhere as well, is nothing short of astonishing. It shows what a handful of dedicated people with a special élan are capable of achieving. Watch for their future projects--we suspect they are just getting warmed up.

Report from the Pickleball Court:

The pickleball group at EE would like to thank all the kids and grandkids who came up and learned and played pickleball over the holidays. We had a 9 year old girl who set a new record for volleys--which may well stand for awhile. She did 56 ball returns, which for those who know the game is an amazing record. Shows that even youngsters can be very skilled at this game. In the future if your children or grandchildren are coming to visit and need a way to run off some energy, send them up to play pickleball. The group has decided to move play to noon, and leave the court open for tennis players during the morning hours, beginning tomorrow, Tuesday January 5.

Accordingly, pickleball play will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, (beginning at the new hour on Tuesday.) We are averaging about 50 players per week, but have room for more, so make a New Year's Resolution to begin the game in 2010. Our stalwart expert instructor and coach, Gary Beatty, is showing no signs of letting up. He will be there to teach you the game and make you better at it. You will be glad you did!

Speaking of pickleball, we now have a pickleball page on the website Forum. Go to http://www.esperanzaestatesforum.net/SMF/index.php?board=9.0  to check it out. If you have questions about the game, put them on the page for answers. If you have comments, do the same. It is the place for all players and interested persons to exchange ideas, thoughts, questions and what have you about the game and the sport.

Remember the annual meeting, January 18th.

Welcome back, Bryon and Elaine!

Have a good first week of 2010.
