Esperanza Estates

Green Valley, AZ

January 30

Good Morning:

Editor's Note:
The original idea to have a weekly news bulletin in Esperanza Estate came from resident Bruce Liljegren. Max Perry, then HOA president, picked up the idea and ran with it, beginning in June of that year. The first issue went out to 21 subscribers. Max edited the Memo for its first 62 issues, turning over the reigns to me in October of 2006. Except when traveling, I have largely written and distributed the Memo for the past 275 weeks, about 5 and a half years. The Memo has served a definite purpose, and now goes to about 290 residents--a significant majority of our subdivision.  During that time, and to give credit where credit is definitely due, various technical issues were resolved by our webmaster, Craig Surprise, who also made valuable suggestions for its improvement.  It has been a good run, and I have very much appreciated the opportunity to communicate so regularly with all of the people who have enjoyed receiving the Memo, and who have told me so. The time has come to turn the publication over to new editors, whom I am sure will add features and give it a new perspective. I am pleased to announce that beginning in February, the MMM will be written and edited by Cynthia Surprise (our Periodico editor), and Kris Bean.  With assurances that the Memo will be in good hands, I now leave our weekly neighborhood communications to Cynthia and Kris, and wish them well.

Important Note: to ensure that you continue to receive the Monday Morning Memo, please add 'ee-webmaster@msn.com' to your email Contact List or Address Book.  Future MMM emails will come to you from 'EE Monday Morning Memo' with the email address noted above as the 'From' and 'Reply To' addresses.  Your email provider, and/or the email application on your computer, may reject messages from the new address unless you have added it to your address book or contact list.  (As always, if you don't receive your copy of the MMM in any week, you can read it on the EE website.)

We are sorry to report the passing of long-time EE resident Mavis Ulery, who died last Sunday. Mavis was very active socially for many years in our neighborhood, and her daughters are planning a memorial service for her in the future. They have asked if anyone has photos of Mavis, that they please contact daughter Karen White, at (503) 347-1730, and make the pictures available for a collage which they want to put together to show her life.

We were also saddened to learn this week of the recent passing of James Rodemeyer, who was an absolute prince of a man. Our condolences go out to his widow Trish, and his entire family.

Thanks to the Enhancement Team and the residents who contributed delicious baked goods, the second annual Dessert Buffet was a sweet success! Attendees indulged in a vast array of wonderful desserts and participated in an old-fashioned cake walk. Lucky winners Jim Kitchak and Cynthia Gates, took home some very special desserts as prizes. One of the high points of the evening was the raffle for the fabulous gift bucket donated by Anne Kear. Congratulations to winning ticket holder Sandy Oster! This event was a fund raiser, and all proceeds will be used by the Team for the betterment of our neighborhood.

Another outstanding edition of the Periodico de Esperanza, our monthly news magazine, is now available on our website. Click here to go to the Periodico Index, then click on "January '12" to open the latest issue.  (It's the biggest issue so far, so be ready to wait quite a while longer for the issue to load than usual!)

A work crew headed by Terry Shay scrubbed and power washed all of the chairs and tables in the Ramada, as well as the floor, last Thursday morning. This effort was much needed--and will be much appreciated. Many thanks to the volunteers who worked on this project, and to Terry, who loaned his equipment to enable this job to be done.

Drummer Wanted.  The Centennial Committee is seeking a volunteer who can play a drum (which the Committee will furnish) and would be interested in being part of the ceremony at EE Park on February 14. Please contact Judy Prato at 269-7217 if you can help.

A note from our Hikemaster, Marian Mundale, with a description of today's hike.  Monday we will be hiking Hidden Canyon trail in the Tucson Mountains, after meeting at the Ramada at 9 a.m. to arrange carpooling. This can be a two-mile loop hike or a five mile hike, with about a 400 foot change in elevation. From the trail head, go past the signs and begin to work your way into the canyon. The desert landscape will quickly block the resort from view, making the hike feel much more isolated than it really is. You will soon pass the first of several signs placed along the trail that highlight some of the native flora and  fauna. The trail will follow a wash for the first quarter mile before it begins to work its way up the hillside. The climb is actually rather pleasant and is just enough to get your blood pumping. Soon the trail reaches the top of a ridge, where it provides some less than amazing views of Tucson.

There will be some rocky, rugged areas, so hiking shoes are great to be wearing.  Bring snacks, water, etc.  I don't think this is in Saguaro National Park, drivers bring your Golden Age pass anyway.

We will meet at the Ramada at 9:00 Car fare $4.00.

Have a good week
