Monday Morning Memo

January 14, 2013        Esperanza Estates        Green Valley, AZ

Pool Update
Replacement of the cool decking has been moving right along. Go ahead. Peek through the fence. It looks great! All indications are that access to the hot tub will be restored early this week. Re-opening of the pool, however, is dependent on a fully functioning pool cover. We'll keep you posted.

Today's Hike Canceled
Last week's hike on the Elephant Head bike trail, with it's side trip to the sweat lodge, was a hit with EE hikers. Enthusiasm for hiking in freezing temperatures, however, seems to be non-existent. Today's planned bikini-clad hike to Mt Lemmon has been canceled.
Fearless Leader, Marian Mundale, will lead the wild bunch to Indian Kitchen on Monday, January 21. It's a 2 mile local hike with 200 feet of elevation. An 8:30 am starting time should get everyone back in plenty of time for the annual meeting.

Coffee Klatch
According to the American Heritage Dictionary, a "coffee klatch" is a casual social gathering for coffee and conversation. So the new name of the popular EE monthly event certainly fits. Join your friends and neighbors this Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Ramada for free coffee, pastries, and conversation. The camaraderie of the gathering will warm your heart, the heaters will take care of the rest.

Public Arts Club Meets Wednesday
The Public Arts Club meets Wednesday, January 16th at 10 am at the Ramada. Discussion of the approval process for placement of public art is on the agenda. Have a talent or project you'd like to share? Stop by and join in the fun

Movie Night Frozen Out
Unable to procure Ice Station Zebra, Journey to Antartica, or North Pole Adventures, the Arts Club has canceled movie night for this week.

Women's Pickleball
A new women-only pickleball group is starting up for the beginner/novice skill level. The group will play on Thursdays at 1:00. Check What's Up in EE? at the bottom of this memo for the full pickleball schedule.

Start Snapping!
The deadline to submit photos for the Periodico's photo of the month contest is Friday, January 18. We've seen some stunning photos in the past. Let's keep that going in 2013. You can email your photos to droessle@mac.com or deliver them to 801 Circulo Napa.

EEHOA Annual Meeting
There is a lot going on in Esperanza Estates. Attend the Annual Meeting at Desert Hills Social Center on January 21 at 2:00 (1:30 sign-in) to hear the reports and plans by the Board and committees. These folks do a tremendous amount of work, day in and day out, to make our community a better place to live. It isn't easy, and the annual meeting is a great place to show your appreciation for their efforts.
Haven't mailed your ballot yet? There's still time, and the vote counters truly appreciate all those early ballots.

A Rose By Any Other Name
The rose may smell as sweet, but if you want people to use your correct name, wear an official EE name badge at EE social functions. The next batch of name badge orders will be placed on January 27. Contact Melodye at 399-0455 or melodye1@cox.net to order a badge ($6.00) or replacement magnet ($1.00).

Picture This!
Next Monday at 2:00 in the Desert Hills Recreation Center parking lot, dozens of cars will be lined up displaying Esperanza Estates license plates. It sends a great message, folks. Be one of those avid EE supporters by calling Bill Berdine at 344-7301 to get your plate.

You CAN Make A Silk Purse From A Sow's Ear
Thanks to the talent and efforts of Stacie Meyer, the drab old cement bench at the EE Monument got an extreme makeover and is now a work of art. The Gardeners will be moving the bench to a more visible spot where more residents will see and enjoy it. Feel free to sit on it. Contact Stacie (344-7301) if you would like to decorate one of our other benches.

Desert Tortoise Sighting
The lumbering gait of a desert tortoise may be slow, but Gardeners and Arts Club members made rapid strides towards completing EE's ceramic tortoise at their workshop last Tuesday. Other volunteers decorated pots to be sold at the Home Tour this spring. The group's pueblo village is taking shape and would make the Anastazi proud.

Accessible Entrance
Kudos to the Gardeners for revamping the entrance to Esperanza Estates Park to make it easy to enter. The new, paved walkway is very inviting and will facilitate accessibility by all residents. Check it out!

Ice Cold Case
Our own Sam Barnard is featured on the Discovery ID channel's series Ice Cold Killers. Sam talks about a serial murder investigation for which he was the lead homicide investigator during his time as an Alaska State Trooper. The show next airs on January 16 at 6:00 p.m. Consult your cable listings to confirm the time.

The Three Gs of Burger Night
Great service, great burgers, great company describes the first EE Burger Night of 2013 last Tuesday. Two new enthusiastic hospitality volunteers, Virginia Arndt and Pat Sharpe, made their debut and joined veteran servers in making the evening a fun time. Thanks to them all for their efforts.

Attention Block Captains
You can pick up a copy of your zone sheets at the annual meeting next Monday. They will be located at the table with the EE Directories. If you can't attend, please contact Mary Beth to get your updated zone sheet.

Green Valley Volunteer Showcase
Want to enrich your life and give back to the community? Learn about the many volunteer opportunities in Green Valley by attending the 6th annual Volunteer Showcase on Thursday, January 24, from 1:00 to 3:00 at the GVR West Center, 1111 S. Via Arcoiris. Representatives from over 40 non-profit organizations will tell you about their volunteer needs.

Fountain Is Off
You may have noticed the weather has turned a mite chilly the last couple of days. So, the HOA has turned off the fountain in the Ramada garden to prevent freeze up. It will be back on as soon as it warms up, which can't happen too soon for my taste.
