Monday Morning Memo

September 11, 2017        Esperanza Estates        Green Valley, AZ

Let's Do Lunch
The Enhancement Team is going to lunch at the Agave at Desert Diamond Casino on Wednesday, September 13th and all EE residents are welcome to join them.  Meet at the Ramada at 11:30 to carpool.  Please RSVP to Barb McCalpin (867-8067) by the end of the day on Monday so she can have an accurate count for the reservation.

Hospitality Event -- New Date
The next social event will take place on Saturday, September 16, not on the 13th as previously reported.  The menu includes pulled pork, slaw, baked beans, chips, dessert, beer, wine and soft drinks.  Start time is 6:00 p.m.  Price is $7.00.

Movie Night Returns
Wednesday night movies at the Ramada resume this week at 7:15 p.m. with Space Cowboys.  Plot: four men passed over by the space program get one last chance to be heroes and live out their dreams.  Frank Corvin (Clint Eastwood), Hawk Hawkins (Tommy Lee Jones), Jerry O'Neill (Donald Sutherland), and Tank Sullivan (James Garner) were top pilots with an elite Air Force squadron and on the fast track to becoming the first Americans in space in the early 1950s. However, when NASA was established, the pilots were cut out of the loop. Years later, a Russian satellite's guidance system has started to malfunction. The system is identical to the one Corvin designed for Skylab, so NASA asks Corvin to help with the emergency mission to repair the satellite. Corvin agrees under one condition -- that he be sent up to do the repairs himself, with Hawkins, O'Neill, and Sullivan as his crew. Thanks to the Ellingsons for sponsoring this event.

Oh Boy! Another Board Meeting Looms
Excitement abounds as the EE HOA Board promises another opportunity to witness local government in action. Monday, September 18, is the next regularly scheduled meeting.  Be at the Ramada a bit early for the 1 pm start time and you'll garner the best seat and claim the fluffiest tush cushion.

EE Book Discussion Group
The book discussion group will start meeting again on October 3 at 11:00 in the Ramada.  New members are always welcome.  The books we will be discussing this year are:
2017    Oct. 3    LIFE IN A JAR--Jack Mayer
            Nov. 7   ORPHAN #8--Kim vanAlkemade
          *Dec. 5    -------
2018  **Jan. 9    GLORY OVER EVERYTHING--Kathleen Grissom
            Feb. 6    THE NEST--Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney
Mar. 6    INSIDE THE O'BRIENS--Lisa Genova
            Apr. 3    HOTEL PARADISE--Martha Grimes
            May 1    THE KNOWN WORLD--Edward P. Jones
*December was left open with suggestions to bring a book or two you've read and enjoyed so members can make a list for their personal reading or, when in doubt, go to lunch!
**The subtitle of this is BEYOND THE KITCHEN HOUSE; the date is 1 week later than usual to allow for people to return who left town for the holidays.

Free Bulbs for Lamp Posts
Periodically check your street lamp to make sure it is working and request a new bulb if it isn't. Following the replacement of all the lamp heads in EE in 2010, the Board began offering to install CFL (energy-efficient) replacement bulbs to keep the look of EE's street lighting consistent. The approved 13-watt, warm-white CFL bulbs are available at no cost by calling Tom Cooke (399-0455) or Joe McCalpin (867-8067).

How to Reserve the Ramada
Our Ramada has become a popular venue for many community and private events.  If you would like to reserve the space for a function, be sure to sign up on the calendar that is posted on the bulletin board in the kitchen area.   Please include a contact telephone number.

Nothing on Your Calendar?
Start filling in those blank spaces on your calendar.  The fine folks at Green Valley Council have lined up a road funding forum with our District Four Pima County Supervisor Steve Christy and Deputy County Administrator Carmine DeBonis. Specifics- Monday, September 25 at 2pm at the Green Valley Recreation West Center.

In Memoriam
Our condolences to the family and friends of Art Henson (Calle del Regalo) who passed away last week.  Art was one of EE's original residents.
