Monday Morning Memo

January 4, 2016        Esperanza Estates        Green Valley, AZ

First Day--First Class
Thanks to Jane Ellingson and Mona Sheffield for organizing EE's first 2016 neighborhood celebration and to the volunteers who helped set up and serve.

Book Discussion Group
The January meeting will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Ramada.  The group will discuss The Last Days of Dogtown by Anita Diamant.  New members are always welcome. Heaters will be on for your comfort.  If you want to get started on the February selection, it's The House We Grew Up In by Lisa Jewell.

Book Exchange
January is expected to be cool and rainy.  Perfect weather for staying indoors with a good book.  You'll find some interesting selections at the EE Book Exchange located in the pool enclosure area at the Ramada.  Donations of books are always appreciated.

Artisans Weekly Meeting
The forecasted high of 54 degrees on Thursday might be a little nippy to enjoy the Ramada even if you are knitting a heavy sweater.  Jane Ellingson has graciously offered to hold this week's meeting at her home at 160 Holgado at 1:00 p.m.  Bring your knitting or just stop in to socialize.

Everything You Need to Know about the Painted Shoes Workshop
Joey Sourant will conduct this creative workshop on Thursday, January 14 at 1:00 PM.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate. The workshop should be finished by 3:00 PM, but Joey will plan to stay for anyone who needs extra time. Paint, brushes and sealer will be supplied. Bring your own shoes...preferably old ones you don't wear anymore, or ones that need a little spiffing up. You might want to visit the White Elephant if there is nothing in your wardrobe. Leather or canvas is fine. If you plan to use several colors, sandals, golf shoes, clogs, etc. with sections (seams) work best.

Joey expects she has enough paint for everyone, but you can buy your own if you prefer. If you do, Joey suggests Lumiere by Jacquard, and Joanne's often carry small packets with a sampling of quite a few colors. Or try, Amazon.com.  Lumiere paints are metallic or pearlized. Some people like Neopaque by Jacquard, which are more of a flat paint. Joey has about 15 colors of Lumiere to choose from.

If you have an extra vinyl tablecloth you don't need for a dinner party, please bring it.

Contact Joey at 777-7728 or jtseagle64@hotmail.com if you have any questions.

Our Own Optimist Sausage Fest
Go ahead and run that extra mile you resolved to add to your workout.  The Hospitality-sponsored Sausage Fest on Tuesday,
January 19th will refuel your tank.  Enjoy the Optimist's fine sausage in a bun, with peppers, onions, beverage, and a cookie for a mere $7 per person.

Important Information and Helpful Hints about the EEHOA Annual Meeting
Date: Wednesday, January 20
Time: 1:00 p.m.
Location: Canoa Hills GVR Social Center, 3660 S Camino del Sol.  Note that the day and location have changed from prior years.
You should receive your ballot some time this week or early next week.  Contact Ben Sheffield if you don't receive it.
Here are some tips to insure that your vote counts:

  • Be sure to return your ballot in the self-addressed envelope included in your packet.

  • Please DO NOT REMOVE or obliterate the label with your lot number found on the return envelope. If you do, your ballot will not be counted.

  • If you inadvertently misplace your ballot, please contact Ben Sheffield. Please DO NOT make a photocopy of your neighbor's. It will not be counted.

Attention New Residents
The Bienvenidos reception for new residents is on Wednesday, January 13. If you have not done so yet, please RSVP to Barb McCalpin (867-8067) or Cynthia Surprise (857-209-1978) by Friday, Jan. 8.

Pool Passes Pima
Tom Cooke passes on the information that EE's pool and spa passed last week's county inspection with flying colors. Water chemistry earned a perfect score.

And the Winner Is.....
Chris McMahon is the lucky winner of the original painting of Mt. Hopkins.  The raffle brought in $220.

Calling 911
If you need to call 911 from the Ramada, remember that the address of the Ramada is posted outside the first gate to the pool enclosure. It's also posted on the wall next to the restrooms.  If you don't have a cell phone, you can use the wall phone located between the restrooms.  Check out the locations as well as the AED next time you're at the Ramada to be sure you'll easily find them if you ever need them.

Christmas Tree Disposal
Need to dispose of your Christmas Tree?  Sorry, Dean Hess says that Hot Desert is not contracted to do that. You can turn yours into mulch if you have a wood chipper, or take it to a Tree Cycle location in Tucson:  www.tucsonaz.gov/treecycle.  Or slip them into your trash one tiny branch at a time.
